Premiership Football Cliches...deconstructed

OK, I put a few football cliches on my World Cup football blog and got a lot of interest, so here are some more football cliches...deconstructed.

'It All Comes Down To Who Wants It More'

This is a favourite of many football commentators, used when they really have no idea why one side beat another.

It's often used in this context : "Well, the teams were evenly matched, so it really came down to who wanted it more".

Um, sorry, no, it didn't.

Personally, I would love to be a Premiership football manager. And I know enough people who would love to be footballers to put together a full squad. Believe me, these are people that 'want it'. They wouldn't care about win bonuses, weekly wages, or any of that stuff...they really would just want to win for winnings sake.

They would, to use the cliche, be the team that 'wanted it more'.

Only problem is...my team of wannabees would lose every time. They would lose because, frankly, they are cr*p.

Teams don't win football matches just because they want to win. They win because a) they're the better team; b) they got lucky or c) they had better tactics .

So, let's forget this 'they wanted it more' rubbish, shall we?
