One Down...Nineteen To Go

So, Iain Dowie has been sacked by Charlton Athletic because the club thought that if they didn't sack him, the club would get relegated.

So far, so obvious - if a little more honest than most Premiership clubs. So, who have they put in charge?

Well, its got to be an experienced manager who knows his way around, has been in those situations before and got his clubs out of trouble, hasn't it? Even a short term appointment of the kind that Big Ron used to get when he was busy keeping failing clubs up for another year. That's the sort of experience you need if you're bottom of the league and all your players (with one or two exceptions) are rubbish or injury prone or both.

So, who do Charlton get in to be the manager ? Les Reed, that's who. Yup, THE Les Reed.

No, I'd never heard of him either. Apparently he's a very
experienced coach with international credentials, yada, yada, yada...

Has he ever managed before. Um. No. Is he the man to keep Charlton from getting relegated. Um. no.

What A Lot of Injuries...What A Strange Coincidence

On Wednesday, there are a bunch of meaningless international friendlies. These are the kind of matches that Premiership club managers hate and don't want their players involved with. They would much prefer that their players avoided the risk of injury and were training with their own clubs.

So, it is quite a coincidence that a large number of big name Premiership footballers have acquired injuries ahead of these friendlies, isn't it?

England have lost 8 players - with a variety of excuses ranging from calf to groin injuries. van Persie has pulled out of the Holland match, Alex Ferguson tried to withdraw Ronaldo from Portugal's game but failed ...the list goes on.

Far be it from me to suggest that maybe these players aren't as injured as their managers thought they were, but I confidently predict a few miraculous recoveries in time for the next round of Premiership football matches.
